To many people, chiropractors "treat bad backs". While chiropractic is a highly effective way to relieve back problems, your chiropractor takes a holistic approach to your entire health and well-being and can help with many problems, from infant colic to migraines. Because your brain and nerves work together to control the rest of your body, the emphasis of chiropractic care is on the integrity and good function of this nervous system. The spinal cord, that carries the information between the brain and nerves, is protected by the moving bones of the spine. Sometimes the movement of the spine can interfere with the working of the nerves in the spinal cord, resulting in what chiropractors call a 'fixation'. When this happens, the nerves are no longer able to control your body effectively, giving rise to a number of health problems and leaving the body at risk from disease and dysfunction.
Your chiropractor is highly trained in the detection and correction of such fixations and will combine the evidence gained from a thorough examination and extensive medical history to arrive at a treatment plan that is best for you. Your treatment will be aimed at restoring your body’s ability to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.
How long will my treatment take? Because every person is different, the rate of healing will vary from person to person. Some people may experience an immediate improvement in their condition, while for others it may be a slow, gradual process. Your chiropractor should be able to tell you how long they expect your treatment to take after they have taken your medical history and examined you.
Chiropractic is a safe and painless way to restore good function and as such is suitable for everyone from the youngest to the oldest family member. Where the affected area is inflamed or very sensitive, some mild discomfort may be experienced during or after your treatment. This is usually very short-lived and should not concern you. If you are worried about any aspect of your treatment, be sure to raise it with your chiropractor, who will be able to explain to you what is happening.
Because chiropractic is based on the restoration and maintenance of the body’s own healing mechanisms, many patients choose to see their chiropractor even when they feel at their very best. Their interest in wellness and preventative care will help to ensure that once they get well, they stay well.
