Sports therapy involves the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation
of musculoskeletal injuries with manual therapy rehabilitation techniques.
These injuries can be sports related or from work or home. In addition
to treatment and rehabilitation, the cause of the problem will be identified
and the sports therapist will implement prevention strategies in order
to reduce the risk of the problem recurring.
'Hands-on' treatment techniques used include soft tissue massage and mobilisation, ultrasound, taping and rehabilitation exercises to promote flexibility, mobility, strength, stability and muscle balance. In conjunction with this hands-on approach, fitness programmes and nutritional advice can also be provided to improve your health, making your recovery more complete and giving you back control.
The main difference is in the scope of the two professions. Whilst Physiotherapists are also involved with injuries, they also manage people with systematic problems, for example stroke victims. They are a commonly used form of treatment within the NHS. Sports Therapists focus on the assessment and rehabilitation of people with both professional and recreational sports injuries, and on improving the function and performance of the body.
